ARTIST STATEMENT AND BIO
What I attempt to capture within my paintings is a process of discovery. Not uncommon to most realist artists, the paintings have stories to tell. Those stories often develop while painting on location.  There is an unmistakable power of inspiration that occurs while painting for hours at a particular spot. Learning to choose what needs to be said is the often difficult task.  To the casual observer it seems an easy undertaking, the artist knows otherwise. What commands my attention varies, yet there is a constant thread that connects each painting to the next. There is an inner battle where rich colors are involved. I love the saturation that light brings out or attempts to hide, fighting to keep it in check. That is what so many collectors find appealing in my paintings.  The trees that cradle the snow or sway with the winds, the rivers that run wild and those that meander and reflect their surroundings become the leading actors of the story.  When the figure is involved they become part of the story working to keep it within not overtaking the rest of the elements. With my paintbrushes I attempt to animate those objects. To have the viewer drawn into the painting is a goal of most landscape artists, an open invitation to join in the beauty. In that sense I truly enjoy just being there as much as I do the painting process.
Judson  earned his BS and Masters in Art Education from Buffalo State College. A lifelong resident of New York State, he continues to live in West Valley, NY.  Considering himself the artist first and then teacher he has maintained active involvement with contemporary artists and art organizations. “When you are painting alongside other artists, it is always a learning experience and sharing of ideas, methods and materials” says Brown.  The Adirondacks have become our second home especially during the summer months, and more than just painting inspiration. Published Adirondack artwork first appeared in the American Artist magazine in 1990
Judson continues teaching adult workshops and traveling to paint on new locations. He participates in group exhibitions and shows, having received numerous awards.  Judson currently shows paintings at View and Gallery 3040 in the Adirondacks. Regional shows at the Arnot Art Museum in Elmira and Meibohm Fine Arts in East Aurora are also included in his activities.
